- Grove Park, Weston Woods and the sands at Sand Bay
The beach at Weston is famous for its wide stretch of sand and the sea that retreats a long way at low tide. Between the sand and the water lies a band of soft mud that is deceptive and slippery, and dogs love it. Hose off the legs and belly at the end of a beach day, because sand rubs the skin raw in the armpits and the folds of the groin.
Sand Bay, to the north, is a long open beach with dunes and a wide sky. Dogs run for hours there, and fine sand works its way deep into the undercoat. Brush thoroughly and bathe when sand is thick in the coat, otherwise it sits against the skin and the dog starts scratching. Long-coated dogs benefit from a shorter clip in summer.
Weston Woods rises steeply behind the town, with trails through trees and an old hill fort at the top. The woodland floor is damp, covered in leaf mould, and full of bracken and brambles. Check the legs, tail and belly for burrs after each walk, and give the coat a firm brush. Dogs that climb these hills have good muscles but tangled feathering.
Grove Park offers a tamer green space near the centre, with flowerbeds and paths. Visitors bring dogs of every kind, and the town's guesthouses and seaside rentals mean many dogs are away from home. If you are staying, a short rinse and brush at the end of each day makes the journey home much easier, and a groomer can freshen up a coat before you travel.

- Note what your dog's coat does after a wet walk: tangles, holds mud, sheds or stays silky.
- Ask any groomer how they handle a nervous dog, what the price includes and whether they work around Weston-super-Mare.
- Brush your dog for a few minutes after walks near Grove Park, Weston Woods and the sands at Sand Bay for two weeks, and see how the coat changes.

Good questions
Before you begin.
How do I get sand out of my dog's undercoat?
Brush the coat thoroughly when it is dry, then bathe and rinse until the water runs clear. Pay attention to the armpits, belly and between the toes.
Is the mud on Weston beach safe for dogs?
It can be soft and deep in places, and the tide moves fast. Keep dogs on firm sand and away from the mud.
Can I book a groom while on holiday near Weston?
This site cannot say who is available. Ask groomers directly about timing, and allow for the season.
