The Severn Estuary has one of the biggest tidal ranges in the world, and the shore at low tide is grey, glossy mud. It looks inviting to a dog, but it is soft and deep in places, and it clings to fur like paint. Keep dogs out of the soft stuff and rinse off any that gets in as soon as you can, because dried estuary silt turns into a hard shell.
Salt is the other problem. Spray from the coastal path and a dip in the water leave salt crystals in the coat that dry the skin and pull at the hair. Rinse with fresh water at the end of a shoreline walk and brush while the coat is damp but not soaking.
The Lake Grounds and Woodland Park offer a softer walk, with grass, trees and a boating lake where ducks tempt some dogs to swim. Lake water carries algae in warm months, so rinse any dog that swims and keep it from drinking. Dogs that swim often benefit from a conditioner to keep the coat from tangling.
Labradors, retrievers and spaniels are common along the seafront, and their thick coats take time to dry. A groomer with a strong dryer can lift out the undercoat and cut the time the skin stays wet. Ask about this when comparing prices, and about extra charges for particularly muddy dogs.
General estimates, not quotes. Each groomer sets their own fee, and prices vary by dog and market.

- Note what your dog's coat does after a wet walk: tangles, holds mud, sheds or stays silky.
- Ask any groomer how they handle a nervous dog, what the price includes and whether they work around Portishead.
- Brush your dog for a few minutes after walks near the Lake Grounds, Woodland Park and the Severn Estuary coastal path for two weeks, and see how the coat changes.

Good questions
Before you begin.
How do I clean estuary mud off my dog?
Let it dry, brush it out as far as you can, then rinse and bathe with a gentle shampoo. Keep dogs away from soft deep mud in the first place.
Is salt water bad for my dog's coat?
Dried salt can irritate the skin and tangle the fur. A fresh water rinse and a brush after a coastal walk help.
Can my dog swim in the Lake Grounds?
Check signs and local advice first, because water quality varies, especially in warm weather. Rinse your dog afterwards either way.
