The seafront at Clevedon is a gentle place to walk, with the pier, the shingle and the long esplanade all close together. Sea spray leaves a fine film of salt on the coat, and shingle can collect between the toes. After a seafront walk, wipe the paws and check the pads for small stones before they work their way into the skin.
Poets' Walk climbs through woodland above the water with steps and steep bends, a good test for fit dogs. Damp leaf litter clings to long coats and gathers in the feathering of spaniels and setters. A comb through when you get home removes the debris while it is still loose, instead of letting it work into a mat.
Salthouse Fields is wide and open, popular for ball games and meeting other dogs. In wet weather the grass becomes a sodden carpet that soaks into low-slung bellies, and dogs with feathering end the day with brown, dripping legs. Keep a dry towel and a spare lead in the car, and finish with a proper blow dry so damp fur does not sit against the skin.
Hill Road and the streets near the front are lined with period houses, and older dogs are a common sight on the promenade. Older dogs often have stiffer joints and thinner coats, so they may find long grooms tiring. Tell any groomer about arthritis or sore spots, and ask whether shorter, more frequent visits are possible.
General estimates, not quotes. Each groomer sets their own fee, and prices vary by dog and market.

- Note what your dog's coat does after a wet walk: tangles, holds mud, sheds or stays silky.
- Ask any groomer how they handle a nervous dog, what the price includes and whether they work around Clevedon.
- Brush your dog for a few minutes after walks near Salthouse Fields, Poets' Walk and the seafront for two weeks, and see how the coat changes.

Good questions
Before you begin.
How do I remove sand and shingle from my dog's coat?
Brush it out once the coat is dry, wipe the paws and check the pads for small stones. A bath will deal with whatever remains.
Is the sea air bad for my dog's skin?
Salt can dry the skin and pull at the hair. A fresh water rinse and brush after seafront walks help.
How can I help an older dog cope with grooming?
Ask for shorter sessions, breaks and a groomer who is used to stiff joints. Let them know about any sore spots before the visit.
